By Bookaday Editorial Team · Published · 9 min read

Quick summary

  • Daman is about 12 km (roughly 30 minutes) from Vapi, about 122 km (2.5 to 3.5 hours) from Surat and about 170 km (3.5 to 4.5 hours) from Mumbai by road.
  • A good one-day plan: Moti Daman Fort and Bom Jesus Church in the morning, a resort pool and lunch at midday, then Devka or Jampore Beach for the evening.
  • Three Nani Daman resorts on Bookaday sell 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM day packages with pool access: Devka Beach Resort, Miramar Greens and Mangalya Vatika.
  • The sea can be rough: in August 2026 a lifeguard rescued a seven-year-old from strong waves at Nani Daman beach. Use the resort pool for swimming.
  • In the monsoon or on rough-sea days, swap the beach for forts, churches and a longer resort stop.

A one day trip to Daman works best when you split the day into three parts: Portuguese forts and churches in the cool morning, a resort pool and lunch in the midday heat, and a beach sunset before driving home. This guide gives realistic drive times from Surat, Vapi and Mumbai, a sample itinerary for each, and backup plans for rough-sea and monsoon days. For the midday stop, see the Daman day picnic listings.

How far is Daman from Surat, Vapi and Mumbai?

Vapi is the closest hub, about 12 km or roughly 30 minutes by road, and also the nearest railway station. From Surat, Daman is about 122 km on NH 48, roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours. From Mumbai, it is about 170 km, roughly 3.5 to 4.5 hours, so a day trip needs a very early start.

What can you see in Daman in one day?

In one day you can comfortably cover Moti Daman Fort, the Church of Bom Jesus, Nani Daman's St Jerome Fort, and one beach. Daman is small, so the challenge is heat and timing rather than distance. Add a resort stop at midday so the afternoon does not drag.

A sample one-day itinerary

This plan assumes you arrive by about 9:00 AM. If you are coming from Mumbai, start the itinerary at the resort and do the forts after lunch.

  1. 9:00 AM: Moti Daman Fort and the Church of Bom Jesus while it is cool.
  2. 10:30 AM: cross the Damanganga to St Jerome Fort in Nani Daman.
  3. 11:30 AM: check in to your resort day package; pool time before lunch.
  4. 1:00 PM: lunch, then rest in the shade or play indoor games.
  5. 3:30 PM: a second pool session if your package allows.
  6. 5:00 PM: Devka or Jampore Beach for a walk and the sunset.
  7. 6:30 PM: start back, with a dinner stop on NH 48.

Is it safe to swim at Daman's beaches?

Treat the sea with caution. On 29 August 2026, a lifeguard rescued a seven-year-old girl from Vapi who was pulled into deeper water by a strong wave at Nani Daman beach, the Free Press Journal reported. The UT tourism page also warns of rocky formations under the water at Devka. Use the beaches for walks, and a resort pool for swimming.

  • Keep children at the water's edge, holding an adult's hand.
  • Avoid the sea entirely when waves are high or in the monsoon.
  • Follow lifeguards' instructions and any posted warnings or local orders.
  • Never swim after a heavy meal, and never swim or drive after drinking.

When do Daman's beaches get crowded?

Weekends, public holidays and summer and Diwali vacations bring the biggest crowds, especially at Devka Beach in the evening. Weekday visits are calmer. If you must go on a weekend, do the forts early, reach the resort before noon, and walk on the quieter Jampore Beach instead of Devka.

What should you do on rough-sea or monsoon days?

When the sea is rough, or in the monsoon from June to September, skip the beach and spend more time at the forts, churches and your resort. Covered areas, indoor games and pool access make a resort the most reliable rainy-day base. Ask the resort whether its pool stays open in rain or lightning.
